Awww!

George has just crawled inside my half-zipped-up hoody (which I'm currently wearing) and is sitting here peeking his head out of the top and purring louder than a diesel engine.  Very, very cute.  No-one can say he doesn't know how to get himself out of the doghouse...

I promise this is the last cat post for a little while...

I have just caught cat number 2, Martha, guiltily leaping down from the kitchen surface where I had (rather sillily) left a half-full tin of tuna.  Judging from the chop-licking that she was doing, I gathered that she'd already stuck her nose in it and I rather lost my appetite for it.  So the spoilt little cats have tuna for tea.  However, now that it's in their bowls they are, inevitably, turning their noses up at it.  I give up.

Eclecticism

Having itunes on party shuffle has made for some fascinating juxtapositions over the past few minutes.  I'll Know from Guys and Dolls, followed by Stoned Love by The Supremes, followed by Nimrod by Elgar, followed by Toy Box by Portishead.  Bizarrely educational!

Things that I should be doing instead of blogging, but I'm not.

...going out on my bike

...getting my bike booked in for a service and replacement gears

...paying a cheque into the bank

...putting away all the DVDs I bought the other weekend

...posting some letters

...hoovering

...buying new blades for the lawnmower

...mowing the lawn

...planting up my windowboxes

...sweeping and weeding the front yard (although as this is a communal area I'm a bit pissy about being the one that ends up doing it all the time, but that's another story...)

Girl about Town. And her dad.

My dad was up in town last night, so we decided to go to the theatre to see Phantom (turn sound off or down if you're at work).  I'd seen it before, although from a rubbishy seat at the far right of the gods, and Dad had never seen it.  So we were both rather excited - and I have to say it didn't disappoint.  There were little niggles - there were some very strange pinched vowel sounds from more than one member of the cast and the Phantom spent too much time 'acting' and not enough time singing, which is not a criticism I ever thought I'd level at anyone!  However it is visually fantastic and the voices were lovely, especially Sally Harrison as Carlotta.  And when the overture starts - the famous Phantom organ music - and the chandelier is hoisted into place above the audience, I had shivers down my spine and actually started welling up.  Many people are sniffy about Andrew Lloyd-Webber, but by God he knows how to write a show with tingle-factor, and the fact that the theatre was 2/3 full on a Tuesday night after nearly 20 years running is impressive.

After the show we left the theatre and went next door to Galileo's restaurant for dinner, where we had a lovely meal, entertained by the very friendly staff.  As we walked in the maitre d' asked if we'd come from the theatre.  When we said yes, he looked at his watch and said 'Oh, it must be Tuesday.  On Thursdays she dies and you get out early!'  Then, between our starters and main courses, he came over to our table and picked up my dad's fork, which he seemed to be inspecting for dirty marks.  We were about to protest about how clean it was and how lovely the starter had been, when he picked up my fork as well and put the two handles end to end.  The forks were obviously magnetised somehow, so my fork hung, spinning in midair like magic.  I don't know about anyone else, but I like to be entertained, so thoroughly enjoyed this!

After the meal we headed off to Regent Street to catch a bus home, where I spotted Peyton, of Queer Eye UK fame, walking towards us, looking exceptionally dapper.  I wish I'd had the courage to say hello, as he genuinely is my favourite of the UK Fab 5 - maybe next time...

New Hair

I've just got back from the hairdressers and now have lovely renewed colour and straighter than straight hair, which is quite unusual for me.  It is, however, more difficult than you might think to get a picture of the back of one's head.  Actually, thinking about it, of course it's going to be difficult.  I'm just a derr brain (thanks Hyper) for even imagining it vaguely possible.  I did, however, end up with the following amusing photographic trick where my head is in the foreground and my legs in the background, courtesy of a mirror.  Not what I intended, but it made me giggle, so here is said image:

The colour's actually redder than it looks in this photo but my camera's a bit pants.  Ah well...

Elvis Shmelvis

I've never been one of those people that raves on about Elvis and the Beatles and how great they were and how all modern music is rubbish in comparison because, quite frankly, I don't believe that.  However, I was in the bar at Battersea Arts Centre last night and they were having an Elvis tribute night.  And I suddenly realised that he did some great songs.  Not world-changing, but toe-tapping and eminently danceable to.  And he was quite beautiful, too.  Not in the bloated, white disco suit phase, but earlier on, before the sex, drugs 'n' rock'n'roll lifestyle took its toll.

See?

Elvis, I raise a glass to you - of course you can be my teddy bear.
