DON'T PANIC!

I received a letter from those nice people at the Inland Revenue this morning.  It was a letter to say that my tax return had not been received and would I please send it, along with any money owing, now.  (Yes, they put the now in bold).

Once I had finished hyperventilating I recovered my composure enough to check my cheque stubs and bank statement.  Yes, I had paid them and the cheque had been cashed.  So I phoned them to say all was well and could they please stop frightening me like that.

However, they told me that the return itself had not been received. But that's OK because the payment has been cashed so I won't get any penalties, right?  (Katja starts to panic mildly again).  RIGHT?  Oh no, we're afraid not.  You'll have to appeal against it.

Shit.

Cue frantic phone call to accountants to find out what the hell happened to the return.  Apparently quite a few of their clients have had these letters - you could almost hear the receptionist's head falling into her hands as she wearily told me to fax the letter through and they would deal with it.  I don't think she was having a good week...

Challenge Joanna

Inspired by a conversation the other night with the lovely Li'lo, I decided to play the piano this afternoon.  Oh dear.  A combination of cold hands, lack of practice and a desperately out of tune piano made for some pretty hideous sounds.  The cold hands and the tuning are easy enough to sort out, but the practice situation is something that needs to be dealt with.  I don't play often enough, is what it boils down to.  Now that I don't have a piano teacher bullying me into learning new music I just don't bother, which is very naughty.

SO... I have made a promise to myself that I will learn a new piece of music (not just skimming through and going, 'oh, that'll do', but learning it properly) by the end of this month (that may sound like a long time but (a) the piano tuner can't come out until the 13th and (b) I'm so rusty that I think it will take me a while).    And if I don't do it then I don't quite know what will happen, but maybe you lot could suggest some suitable forfeits that I could do?  I need something to goad me into proper action, because I'm a lazy caaah, quite frankly, which is how I got into this mess in the first place!  (Note to self - must...try...harder...)

Ouch

A word of advice: when racing around in a tizzy because you're running late to meet up with friends for a night out, don't leave the iron in a position where you have to squeeze past it in order to get out of the room, as the below painful injury may occur.

This is 24 hours later, after copious application of lavender oil, and it still smarts.  That'll learn me.

Baaa

I've got a half-written review of Honour (currently playing at Wydhams Theatre) sitting on my desktop at the moment, but try as I might I can't make it into a cohesive whole. Arsebiscuits. Once my brain has stopped being fuzzy next week I'll try again, but for now you'll have to make do with a comedy picture of me and a lamb. Loving those pink trainers.

If music be the food of love....

....then I'm currently in the middle of a torrid affair with someone who hates me.  But (as with women everywhere) I'm confident I can change that with a little bit of TLC and hard work.  If I may carry on the relationship analogy a bit further, it's like we've been married for 20 years and got comfortable and a little bit slobby.  It's hard to get back to how we were when we were first together, but given a little bit of time and attention it is perfectly possible.  The piano tuner came round today, which was the first major step. Now I just need to convince my fingers that they can play as well as they type and there'll be a blissful reunion on the cards in no time.

Get in!

I got home last night to find a letter from the Inland Revenue.  Given my recent dealings with them my heart sank.  However, I opened it up to find that I had overpaid and they owe me money - yippee!  This does, however, mean that I need to have a word with my accountants, who were the ones who calculated the money owing and who failed to get my tax return in on time...

Bum

So I tried to send a picture of my scabby arm, afflicted by contact dermatitis, but for some reason 20six isn't accepting pictures at the moment.  I had the same problem the other day as well *sulks*.  I'm afraid I don't really have anything else of interest to report at the moment, so this entry is a bit rubbish - sorry...
