Book 7

Jigs and Reels by Joanne Harris

Jigs and Reels is Joanne Harris' first collection of short stories and, as such, I bought it with slight trepidation.  I love her full-length novels, but so often the writers that do good full-length books can't do short stories and vice versa.  However, I am pleased to report that I thoroughly enjoyed Jigs and Reels, which was well up to Ms Harris' usual standard of writing.

As you would expect, many of the stories were strongly scented with magic and unusual events.  There were magical recipes, vampires, witches and one of Cinderella's ugly sisters.  In contrast, there were defiant old ladies escaping from their nursing home to buy literature and fantastic shoes, a driver suffering from road rage and middle-aged erotic leatherwear makers.  The mundane sits alongside the fantastic, but the common theme is that the stories are all personal.  Love or hate the characters, you can't help but get involved.
