Busy, busy, busy...

...but I have to register my disgust at the fact that there is a film to be made about Beatrix Potter.  With Renee (Annoying, Squinty-Eyed AMERICAN) Zellwegger, playing the lead role.

Zellweger?!!!!

(4.10.05 15:44)
I wish I were joking, Amy...

(4.10.05 15:46)
The Beatrix Potter books were my absolute favourite..i'm currently trying to get my goddaughter loving them rather than Winnie the Pooh, the disney version not even the original! That's rubbish! Ick!

*throws bottles at Rennee the pain*
*grunts his dissaproval*
*leaves in a huff*

(hello btw katja x )

(4.10.05 15:57)
Renee is REALLY unattractive isn't she? I just don't get all the fuss about her - she's far too thin. I liked her as Bridget Jones though.

(4.10.05 15:59)
I watched jerry maguire at the weekend. She really does look like she's permanently sucking a lemon...

(4.10.05 16:05)
Pete - xxx

Evie - Me too, but that's the only good thing she's done, IMHO. She was rotten in Chicago, which really wound me up, because it could have been so great...

Pan - exactly!

(4.10.05 16:21)
I'm not really a big fan of her stories but egads who fronted the cash for this stillborn idea? Did they just watch Finding Neverland and think "If only we could shoehorn Zellwegger in somewhere"?
It's not like Potter's legacy hasn't already taken enough of a kicking with all those gash collectable plates and stuffed toys.

(4.10.05 16:39)
Jef, I'd say that's about the size of it.
*mutters about bloodsucking leeches....*

(4.10.05 16:47)
While I do love her books. She was not much to look at. Beatrix was kind of dumpy and plain. So I would think that it would not matter a bit what Zellwegger looks like, but I would hope she can do a fair job of acting the part.
Renee (Annoying, Squinty-Eyed AMERICAN) Zellwegger - She does look squinty-eyed to me and she may annoy you but what does it matter what her nationality is?
Should the role have been reserved for a not so annoying, clear-eyed English woman?

(4.10.05 17:01)
In a word, Enigma, yes. When there are so many talented English actresses out there who could do the job just as well (if not better), why does the job go to an American? I hasten to add that I have just as much of a problem with British actors playing Americans - Catherine Zeta Jones springs to mind...

(4.10.05 18:10)
I agree with Katja about the whole American thing. Now, I know I live in the US but I think that if you are doing a movie based on someone who is English, let someone English play the role. Not someone who does a passable job of an English accent. Just because someone is considered a "star" does not mean they are the best fit for the role at hand. I mean, some of the best movies I have ever seen have had "no name" actors play the lead roles. Go with someone who fits the role, not someone who will draw the "masses".

(4.10.05 18:55)
Sioned - It is all about economics - drawing the masses is exactly what studios hope to do.
Katja - I appreciate that you feel the same way about British actors playing Americans...
Yet I do think that probably most folks do not give a whit about the real nationality of the person who is playing the role.
In this case with Beatrix being something of a British national treasure I think I agree, as an exception to the rule.
But normally would not agree with such logic that only Americans can play roles set in America and only Italians can play the part of Italians etc.. etc..
Doesn't that sound a bit Nationalistic without it being logical or realistic?
There are so many examples of fine actors portraying nationalities that are not their own.
Would that mean that only British subjects should be allowed to perform Shakespeare on stage?
I could much better understand if it was simply stated, “I can not stand that Annoying, Squinty-Eyed BAD ACTRESSS) Zellwegger” then I can understand , “Annoying, Squinty-Eyed AMERICAN) Zellwegger”
I now get off my soapbox and return to less inflammatory postings.
Wish you both the best!

Enigma, it's about suspension of disbelief. For me, hearing somebody put on an accent which is not their own makes it nigh-on impossible for me to believe in that character. However well you can imitate an accent, there will always be something that gives you away. I would therefore far rather hear somebody speaking with their native accent so that I can sit back and enjoy their performance, rather than wincing at the sounds coming out of their mouth. I probably sound harsh, but this is my profession, after all!

(4.10.05 19:21)
*nods* and *smiles*
I agree to disagree in an amiable sort of way.

(4.10.05 19:59)
Fair enough )

(4.10.05 21:49)
I suppose that is why I am a huge Indie fan. I am not saying I do not like big budget movies but I won't go to a movie just because the masses love it, you know?

(4.10.05 22:09)
Sioned, I have one word for you - Titanic...

*shudders*

(4.10.05 22:48)
Oh Good Lord but I hated that movie. I was forced to see it in the theatre and the person i was with had already seen it. Near the end I was handed a tissue (I guess they thought I would tear up ?), and all I could think was, "Let go Rose, PLEASE JUST LET GO!" I could not get out of there fast enough. I will never get that time back and I hate James Cameron for doing that to me. I mean, I could have been sleeping or pulling my eyelashes out or something.

(5.10.05 09:47)
I went to see it in the cinema too, and was sat next to a very young teenage girl who started sobbing pretty much as soon as the boat hit the iceberg. I was bored silly and wanting to throttle her by the end of the 3 (count 'em!) hours. I did have fun picking out all the howling historical inaccuracies though...

(5.10.05 10:58)
she is a very odd-looking girl.
They lover her over 'ere cos she's half norwegian but thats no excuse. She always has that I-used-too-much-face-scrub look too. This has not won any points with me

(5.10.05 14:51)
Erm has anyone read the reviews of Richard II (starring Kevin Spacey..)

Katja / Website (5.10.05 15:39)
Is that a film or a theatre version, 'Loo? I'd heard nothing about it until now.

(5.10.05 15:54)
What about non-Danes playing Hamlet? *Braces self for fully deserved flippancy related beating*

(5.10.05 15:57)
*beats Jef soundly* Something's rotten in the state of Denmark. And it's not dear Larry's acting.

(5.10.05 16:02)
Theatre Kat.. Read a review in today's paper but can't find anything on web..

(5.10.05 16:12)
Aha!  Got it...

(7.10.05 11:31)
You forgot puffy cheeked and fake pout...
I used to like her until Bridget Jones.

(7.10.05 12:46)
Bridget Jones is the only thing she's even vaguely bearable in, though, CB...

(7.10.05 14:46)
Ahh, I was just on Hot Or Not young lady, I see you're the hottest thing on earth, well done! (Reaaaaally! Go Check!) Just remember I've always loved ya, not like some flaky bloggers
x

(7.10.05 15:24)
*blushes* Peej, between you and Mike I'm quite spoilt really xxx

(7.10.05 20:58)
It's all part of the US invasion of British culture, Floaty. Hollywood barbie dolls doing British accents in second rate movies; US movie stars shipped in to British classics in order to boost the film's sales in the States ... Donald Sutherland as Mr Bennett, for heaven's sakes! What next? Vin Diesel as Nicholas Nickleby?
And what about the fashion for putting a Hollywood star in a creaky play in the West End, and hiking the prices up for the celebrity fans?
Ban the Yankee buggers from the British stage!

(12.10.05 12:41)
Dude, what's cool?

(12.10.05 17:17)
I have no idea, Tosh. Pray, do tell.
