Challenge Joanna

Inspired by a conversation the other night with the lovely Li'lo, I decided to play the piano this afternoon.  Oh dear.  A combination of cold hands, lack of practice and a desperately out of tune piano made for some pretty hideous sounds.  The cold hands and the tuning are easy enough to sort out, but the practice situation is something that needs to be dealt with.  I don't play often enough, is what it boils down to.  Now that I don't have a piano teacher bullying me into learning new music I just don't bother, which is very naughty.

SO... I have made a promise to myself that I will learn a new piece of music (not just skimming through and going, 'oh, that'll do', but learning it properly) by the end of this month (that may sound like a long time but (a) the piano tuner can't come out until the 13th and (b) I'm so rusty that I think it will take me a while).    And if I don't do it then I don't quite know what will happen, but maybe you lot could suggest some suitable forfeits that I could do?  I need something to goad me into proper action, because I'm a lazy caaah, quite frankly, which is how I got into this mess in the first place!  (Note to self - must...try...harder...)

I'm much more of a carrot than stick person in encouraging people to do things - certainly in the beginning. What I would encourage you to be doing is thinking of something good for yourself when you've reached your goal - apart from the satisfaction of having learnt another piece. So, perhaps you need to think of something you want - a trip to somewhere, a book to buy etc - and promise yourself that when you;ve got there.

Ah! I like your thinking, H. Accentuate the positive and all that - it might just work, y'know...

You play piano? I am suitably impressed - I'd love to know how to play piano.

Come back, Russ Conway - all is forgiven.

If you don't learn this new piece by the end of the month I'm going to send you a David Hasselhoff album.

Sorry about the last comment. I always go too far.
I agree with Heather - so much more motivating if you focus on the benefits. And questions like 'why do you want to play the piano?', breaking it down into reasons to do it that you really *care* about when you think about them....
So why do you want to play the piano? What do you get out of it?

Oh just play that piano, girl! And be thankful for having access to one!

Mike, that really would be a punishment and a half! In terms of why I want to play, it's because it's something that used to give me great enjoyment and I would like to regain that. Plus another skill to put on the CV ;o)
Arty, if you want to come round and play the piano (once it's been tuned!) you would be more than welcome. I'm sure my neighbours would welcome hearing some different music from my old standards!
